Half-glazed tan calf, spine with raised bands decorated, pseudonym, title and volume number in gold, marbled paper doublures and endpapers, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Slight wear to headcaps and joints, wear on some cuts and corners; scattered foxing, volume 2: rubbing on margins of some leaves.

Beginning of volume 1: letter written "To a State Prisoner [Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, future Napoléon III, imprisoned at Fort de Ham at the time of writing this letter]", dated May 1, 1843 and signed "Paul L. Volume 2 includes the end of the novel and another text: Italian Society in 1839. Beautiful copy, bound in contemporary half-glazed tan calf.
