Rare Belle Époque black jet satin jacket & sequins Lisse & Cie Chaumont c. 1900

  
Exceptional Belle Époque bodice jacket, circa 1900. Magnificent black satin bodice jacket dating from the Belle Époque, made around that time. This piece stands out for its very high level of craftsmanship and for its sumptuous decoration of jet and appliqués, all entirely handmade. The very fitted cut, characteristic of the late 19th century, is reinforced by numerous stays, all still present, giving the jacket its elegant period silhouette. The interior is lined with a lovely pink printed fabric typical of the Belle Époque and retains its original waist stay.

Embroidered in gold silk thread. The embroidery appears to bear the name Lisse & Cie - Chaumont. Historical research has identified this as an important commercial house in Chaumont, notably offering fashion goods, women’s ready-to-wear, and made-to-measure clothing. An old invoice from this company (1913, after the business was taken over) confirms the existence of this name. Document shown for historical reference only and not included in the sale.

Very good overall condition for a piece over 120 years old. All the boning is present. Embroidery and jet decoration largely complete. One thread holding a small section of the sequins has come loose. The elements are present and can easily be secured by someone able to carry out a small textile restoration.

The jacket remains perfectly presentable. This jacket is a remarkable testament to the excellence of French dressmaking during the Belle Époque. It will suit both a collector of antique costume and a museum, a theater or film costume designer, or an enthusiast of historical clothing.
