Miniature portrait box, Empire period, solid gold, 19th century, K35

  
Magnificent circular box from the First Empire period (early 19th century), a fine example of a vertu object. The lid is adorned with a miniature on a noble material (or vellum under domed glass) depicting a distinguished woman. The miniature is framed with solid gold mounting (acid tested).

Condition: Overall in good condition. The miniature is bright and luminous. There are some normal signs of use and slight age-related wear on the frame (see detailed photos).

Interior: The interior is unfinished, showing the authentic texture of the material. The main issue is the detachment of the medallion on one side. It is clearly visible that the gilded circle (the frame) has lifted out of its setting in the lid.

Frame: The gilded frame appears slightly warped or “wavy” along the left edge of the image, which explains why it no longer sits flat.

Mounting edges: Under the gilded border, leather can be seen; the mounting material has become brittle and is flaking in places.
