LUCIUS ROSSI - “SPRING” - FIGARO ILLUSTRÉ - MAY 1896. The composition, titled “Spring,” depicts an elegant Belle Époque woman lying in the grass in a lush green landscape, with her parasol and book placed beside her and a house in the background. A particularly refined scene, representative of late 19th-century French feminine elegance and of Lucius Rossi’s world. The composition bears the printed mentions “FIGARO ILLUSTRÉ” directly, as well as Lucius Rossi’s signature in the image, at the lower right.
Figaro Illustré - May 1896 - no. 74 - Lucius Rossi, “Spring.” Printed area dimensions: approximately 29 × 39 cm. The plate was formerly mounted on a large collector’s mat board, which especially enhances the composition and gives it a beautiful decorative presence. An old handwritten pencil annotation appears in the upper margin of the mat board. It notably describes the piece as a “very beautiful chromogravure from 1896” and mentions Lucius Rossi. This old annotation has been preserved and is part of the history and presentation of this example. The print features very beautiful, fresh, and luminous colors, especially in the greens of the landscape, the delicate tones of the dress, and the shades of the sky. Documentation devoted to this composition identifies Spring precisely as the cover of Figaro Illustré from May 1896, by Lucius Rossi. Some iconographic databases describe it as a “colour lithograph.” In addition, the Musée Carnavalet documents Figaro Illustré prints from the same period as combining “typographic printing,” “photomechanical process,” and “colour printing.
” The old handwritten annotation on the mat board of this example describes it, for its part, as a “very beautiful chromogravure from 1896.” These different designations reflect the color-printing processes used for luxury illustrated publications of the late 19th century. As a precaution, the exact technique of this example is not stated beyond these documentary elements. Original period document from 1896 - this is not a modern decorative print. Good overall condition considering its 130 years. Some traces and marks of age may be present, especially on the old mat board. Please carefully consult the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
